Results week ending 12/07/2020

Another fantastic week of competitive golf was had at North West with the week ending in style with the Swilly Cup and the Dr McLaughlin cup. Kicking the week off we saw 50 competitors take to the field. Away players dominated the prizes this week but home boy Colin Barlow put in a fantastic performance to take home the top spot.

27 competitors took to the field on Wednesday to take part in the John Cooke Qualifier. Winner on the day was Joanne Harkin recording 76 strokes on the day for a nett score of 69 (-3) Marie McLaughlin recorded a 2 under nett score of 70 (-2) to take second place, while Lorraine McGettigan, rounded out the top three with a level par nett score of 72 (E). Fantastic shooting all round.

Another strong field gathered for the penultimate Thursday Society outing with 44 players taking on the challenge. Great scoring again this week with Sean O'Kane setting the bar high with a great round, scoring 42 points. Stephen Stewart, marked a great improvement in form, beating low handicapper Mathew Stainsby on a break of tie for second and third place respectively.

Next week is the last week of the Thursday society and Captain Mickey has advised that the Captain's day will hopefully be held in September all going well. The Thursday society will be replaced by the Links Open commencing on 23rd July.

Next up we had the Swilly Cup on Saturday, a trophy with a lot of history attached and this was reflected in the 119 players who set their sights on getting their hands on the cup. Only one name can go on the account and it was a day to remember for was Dermot McGlynn winning on a three way break of tie with Gerry McFarland coming second and Michael Walsh coming third on count back. Congratulations Dermot.

With a 2 over round of 72, Paul Starett won the gross prize. Visitors prize went to Oisin O'Flaherty with 38 points while Joe McGinley got in on the action late on with 22 points on the back nine to round out the prizes.

Congratulations to all our prize winners, but special mention has to go to club President Jimmy McFadden on his ace at the 8th. Well done Jimmy.

Finishing the week off we had the Dr McLaughlin cup and again a great showing with 74 players making the effort. Getting in on the action again this week we had new member Patrick Boyle, tearing up the course with a fantastic 44 points. Great shooting Patrick. With a score that would be winning on any other day we had Justin MacLochlain 6 points back on 39, beating Edward Lynch by one shot.


Stewart McGinlay scored the lowest of the rest on the day for the gross prize with 79 strokes recorded. Rounding out the prizes, Gerry McFarland rallied on the back nine to win the back nine prize with 19 points.

Next weekend we have another cup to play for in the Donnell Cup on Saturday and then the first Monthly Medal since the return to competitive golf.
