Jason Spence
LINKS SUPERINTENDENT
Having begun his career in October 2007 at the age of 18, Jason Spence joined North West Golf Club with no greenkeeping experience.
Over the following 8 years, he combined hands-on experience with formal training, completing NVQ Level 2 in Amenity Horticulture (Sports Turf) and Level 3 ANC City & Guilds in Sports and Amenity Turf Management at Greenmount College. He then achieved a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Golf Course Management through Elmwood College in Scotland. This has given him a deep, practical understanding of the unique demands of maintaining a true links course.
In his earlier greenkeeping years, Jason was closely involved in shaping North West into the traditional links course it is today. He contributed to a wide range of development and construction projects, including the construction of the new 4th hole, and played a key role in the full transformation of all bunkers to a traditional revetted style. Having grown up playing the course, he has developed a strong appreciation for its natural character and the importance of working with the environment rather than against it.
Returning to North West Golf Club in September 2025 as Head Greenkeeper, Jason now leads a greenkeeping team of four and oversees the day-to-day management, presentation, and continued development of the course. His approach is centred on preserving the natural links landscape while delivering consistent, high-quality playing surfaces, where attention to detail and respect for tradition are essential. Looking ahead, he remains focused on the ongoing development and presentation of the course for future generations, ensuring North West continues to offer an authentic and enjoyable links experience.
“Having grown up playing this course, it is a privilege to now look after it. I take great pride in maintaining its true links character while presenting it to the highest possible standard for all who play it.”
