Results: Week ending 05/07/2020

Finally a bit of competitive golf eh? And what a week it was. Kicking off the week we had the Tuesday Open and a bumper field with 69 golfers turning out. It was Niall Boyle who took home the prize on this one with a fantastic score of 44 points beating Patrick Boyle by 3 points. The Gross went to Aaron Kearney who managed an impressive 2 over round.


Keith Shiels continued his impressive pre lockdown form with 40 points, while Ciaran Doherty took home the visitors prize with 36 points. Thursday society captain Michael "Thursday Society" Bradley showed impressive grit taking the back nine prize with 21 points.

Wednesday saw probably the fairest weather of the week and the fairest golfer in the club took to the field for the first ladies competition of the year. with the Mary Desmond Cup being played for. This was a stableford Competition and over 30 ladies participated. The winner on the day was Margaret Fisher with a fantastic score of 37 points. Second place was the Lady Captain Ann Coyle with 34 points. Third place on a break of tie was new member to the North West Geraldine Crossan. Congratulations ladies. The prizes and Cup Presentation will be held at a later date.

Next Wednesday 8th July the competition is the John Cooke Qualifier for match play.

The return of the Thursday society saw Keith Sheils romp home with 46 points beating Eamon Quigley by 5 points. Eamon's score of 41 points would certainly have been enough to take the W any other day. Artie Duffy came in third place with another cracking score of 40 points. There was 13 two's recorded on what was a fantastic day of scoring.

On Saturday we had the Spring Trophy a little later than played with 98 members competing in their categories with four prizes on offer. In Div 1 Matthew Stainsby won by 4 points with a score of 36. Div 2 was a tighter contest with Mickey Thursday Society Bradley winning out by a single point over Rory McLaughlin. The tightest contest of the day saw Karol Friel wining on a three way break of tie with a magnificent 41 points and In Div 4 it was Mark O'Connell taking top spot with a cool 37 points.


Perhaps the story of the day though was the HOLE IN ONE recorded by Sean ""he Poet" McLaughlin on the 16th Fairy. When asked about his shot choice and strategy Sean replied, "I just hit it and let God do the rest". Congratulations on a fantastic achievement Sean.

On Sunday we had the Davy Henderson Trophy, a usually hotly contested trophy but poor weather saw only 40 brave souls take to the course. On what is reported to be the first time he has hit a ball in 6 months Brian McCarroll showed that class is permanent winning by two points over former President Frank McHale. PJ McCarron took third place in some tricky conditions.
