North West Golf Club results: Week ending 08/03/2020

A better week weather wise this week saw more competitions going ahead with only the Saturday comp called off. Kicking off the week was the Tuesday open and it was club member Declan McGowan who won out in competitive field with a fantastic score of 34 points over 14 holes. Colum O'Neill took second place on a break of tie from Bernard McDaid both posting 31 points which would normally be enough to win any 14 hole comp.

  1. Declan McGowan 34 points

  2. Colum O'Neill 31 points

  3. Bernard McDaid 31 points

Wednesday saw the start of the new season for the Ladies branch here at North West with their annual “Bring and Win” competition. The weather was much improved on recent weeks and over 20 ladies took to the links for the first competition of the year. The winner was Augusta Neff. Aileen McGlynn in second spot and Bernie Barr third. Congratulations ladies. Everyone was a winner on the day as there were prizes for everyone who played. Next week’s competition is teams of three over thirteen holes with two scores to count.

Thursday was probably the best day of the week weather wise and this saw a large field turn up for the Thursday Society which was played over 13 holes. 1 birdie and 8 pars was just about enough to see Joe McColgan win this one on a three way break of tie. Sean Rafferty took second place over Cecil McGill with both players in fine scoring form.

  1. Joe McColgan 29 points

  2. Sean Rafferty 29 points

  3. Cecil McGill 29 points

Friday saw the ladies winter league team take to the course both here and at Buncrana GC and the ladies clinched the winter league with a fine win over their nearest rivals 3 1/2 to a 1/2. Fitting that this victory for the Ladies branch came on the same weekend as International Womans Day, a victory which I am sure they will savour for a while.

Finally we had a great turn out on Sunday for a confined stableford event which was played over the full course, something that has been rare in recent times with the weather. It was Andy McDermott who took the bragging rights on this on occasion with 2 birdies and 4 pars beating Joe McColgan by 1 point. Liam Doherty took third place in what was another competitive field.

  1. Andrew McDermott 37 points

  2. Joe McColgan 36 points

  3. Liam Doherty 35 points

While its great that we now look to be back 18 holes, the course is still very soft in places so we remind all members to please repair pitch marks and avoid high traffic areas with carts and buggy's where possible. Only 12 days until the season openers, The Shamrock open sponsored by Hegarty's Buncrana, followed up by the St Patrick's open sponsored by PD Plumbing Supplies, so lets all work together and do what we can to have the course in the best possible condition for our members, guests and visitors.
